September's Monthly MANTRA:
Develop the ability to nurture your own well-being. (part 1 of 2) With summer nearing its end and the colder months fast approaching, the need for an extended vacation to self-nourish was something I
began this summer to talk about often and freely among my friends. As the months went by and I had no idea how to fit one in, I asked
the universe for its help. The beach, a book, and a bellini were what I had in mind. What I got was quite different, which again reminded me to watch what you ask for.
Life will generally give you what you request but if you're not precise with what you intend, what I refer to as a cosmic curve ball might hit
you square on the head. Ouch. My request for a few weeks off was answered, but rather than lying on the beach, I instead was lying on the sofa recovering from emergency
shoulder surgery (my second!) which my surgeon said I should have had months ago. While at home I had
plenty of time to reflect upon all this, and it painfully reminded me of three things: I spend too little time
making myself a priority of my own well-being, I need to tune in better when the universe talks to me, and I need to be more specific with my requests!
The ability to self-nourish, like many things, takes various forms in our life experiences. Knowing how to
take good care of ourselves leads us to an understanding that learning to nurture our own well-being
expands our internal reservoir of love and light—if we devote the time and energy required. Way too often, though, that time and energy take a back seat to things we consider more important, and at one time or another, it will take us all hostage. This time it caught up with me.
If you listen, your cosmic wake-up call will whisper softly to you the answers to your wishes. Apparently I had tuned out earlier this year when problems began to
arise and I sought help through a few massages. If you don't listen to the whispers of the requests your bodies are making, the messages do get louder.
That must have been them talking to me when I for months sought treatment with a neuromuscular specialist--while I continued full-steam ahead. If the loud
messages aren't getting your attention, eventually the cosmic curve ball arrives to make you hear.
Continuing to develop the ability to nurture our own well-being is necessary. Our bodies will tell us what
they need if we listen. I obviously need ongoing reeducation myself. And understanding we are all works in
process, I'll try to learn from this and won't beat myself up too badly. Besides, it's hard to do that right now with the use of only one arm…
Part 2 of this monthly mantra will continue next month with ways to make YOU a priority of your own well-being starting with as little as five minutes a day. Check out this column again October 1. -article written monthly by staff employees |
